- Winter Shiprock is a majestic rock formation rising to a height of 7,178 feet in elevation. The rock itself rises 1500 feet from the flat desert floor. It is located on the Great Navajo Reservation near the community of Shiprock, New Mexico. The Navajos call it tse bida' hi, "rock with wings." Their history tells them that the Navajos crossed a narrow sea beyond the setting sun and landed among an unfriendly people which caused the Great Spirit to send a stone ship to carry them to this spot.
